A series of unusual events beginning on May 11, 2011 kick off one of the most unusual disappearances in history. Timmothy Pitzen was the only child of James Pitzen and Amy Joan Marie Fry-Pitzen. Timmothy was dropped off at Greenman Elementary School by his father on what seemed to be any average day, but was shortly picked up and signed out by his mother. According to the school, his mother claimed there was a family emergency and thus Timmothy needed to leave school. After dropping her blue 2004 Ford Expedition SUV at the repair shop around 10 A.M, her and Timmothy took a trip to the Brookfield Zoo. She then proceeded to pick up her car around 3 P.M and drove herself and her son to the KeyLime Cove Resort in Gurnee, Illinois.
Upon receiving the news of Timmothy being signed out of school, his father, James, immediately reported his son and wife missing. The next day, the mother and son duo had checked into the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin and were seen on security footage checking out at about 10 A.M on May 13. On the same day at about 1:30 P.M, Amy made multiple calls to family members promising that her and Timmothy were fine. During these phone calls, relatives spoke to Timmothy and claimed that he sounded fine. What these relatives did not know was that this was going to be the last time any of them spoke to the young boy.
Around 7:30 P.M on this night, Amy was seen inside a dollar store in Winnebego, Illinois alone and purchasing stationary. She then was spotted at Sullivan’s Foods nearby around 8 P.M and then checked in to the Rockford Inn in Rockford, Illinois sometime in between 11:15 and 11:30 P.M. She was not with her son when she checked in. It was there where Amy would spend her last moments before overdosing on antihistamines and slashing her wrists and neck causing her suicide. Her body was found on May 14 at about 12:30 P.M. She left a note behind and sent two letters in the mail to her mother and a friend claiming that Timmothy was fine, but that no one would ever find him.
Amy’s cell phone was missing as was Timmothy’s Spiderman backpack, his clothes, and his toys. According to authorities, it is believed that Amy did in fact give Timmothy to others to care for him. However, as the investigation progressed, authorities became more concerned about his whereabouts and safety. They found traces of Timmothy’s blood in Amy’s SUV but could not say how long it had been there for. They also reported that the car was “visibly dirty” and had traces of soil, grass, and weeds stuck to the undercarriage. Forensic testing would show that the car was stopped for a short time on a gravel area, and had backed into a grassy meadow that had Queen Anne’s lace and black mustard plants. This area would most likely be treeless, and was not cultivated as a lawn or for growing crops.
It is believed that Amy had been planning Timmothy’s disappearance for months because she had taken two unexplained trips to the area previously. However, James claimed he was unaware that any of this was going to occur. He claims though that Amy would never hurt Timmothy, even with her struggles with depression.
Most recently, in April 2019 a man came forward claiming he was Timmothy Pitzen who had been missing. He said that he had escaped from his captors after being passed around and sexually abused for years. However, this was proven to be a hoax and the man was identified as 23 year old Brian Michael Rini who had just been released from prison and was a known sex trafficking victim. Investigators are still searching for Timmothy even though his disappearance still remains unsolved.
