As you may know from my many true crime blog posts, the world can be a super scary place. People go missing all the time, and on many occasions, do not return alive. The faster that your family, friends, and law enforcement get access to information that could help you return safely, the more likely this is. As I’ve mentioned before, I am a HUGE fan of Crime Junkie Podcast hosted by Ashley and Brit. Not only do they provide listeners with new cases all the time, but they also give amazing advice on what to do if you’re ever in certain situations. I first heard about the If I Go Missing folder when listening to an episode of their podcast, and I just knew I had to share it with all of you! This folder is a compilation of all of your most essential information that could help your family and police locate you if you were to ever go missing. Providing information such as that included in this folder could be the key to finding you alive!
The folder starts with some general information like name, age, and cell phone number just to give the basic facts about yourself to provide some general knowledge about who you are. It then includes a section for physical appearance including hair color, tattoos, and identifying scars. This helps police and others know ways that would make identifying you easier. Next is medical information that allows access to information such as surgical history and medications you may have been taking.
Not only does this folder provide information about yourself physically but also your modes of transportation such as your car make/model and even you Uber and Lyft passwords in order to provide access for law enforcement to trace your ride history. It also has sections for your relationships to various people and information about your typical workday and your transportation methods to work. There is also a place to provide information about the locations you frequent so that family or law enforcement have places to start if and when they ever need to search for you. This is followed by a section for financial information so that whoever needed could see your bank account activity in order to locate you. What I think is the most beneficial part of the entire folder is the section for all your social media account username and passwords. This information allows searchers to log in to your accounts to see if you may have communicated with someone or mentioned where you might be going in the case that you may disappear.
The goal of this folder is that you will fill it out and give access to one or two of your closest family members or friends so that they would know where to find it in case you do go missing. Having this information gives those looking for you a crucial head start in of finding you alive. I know that putting so much personal information down on paper could be scary, but in the end if anything ever happened to you, it will be worth it. You can find the If I Go Missing folder on Crime Junkie Podcast’s website, and they will email it to you once you request it. I highly recommend checking out their podcast and getting your own version of the document!
