Our story starts with the childhood of a man named Luka Magnotta. Born to parents who both claimed the other abused him, Luka was also bullied tremendously in school growing up which led to him being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic during his teenage years. In 2010 he began posting anonymous, disturbing videos online of him abusing and murdering helpless little kittens. The next part of our story begins here.
Once viewers began to watch Luka’s viral videos they were determined to find the culprit and hold him accountable for his awful actions. Two internet sleuths led this manhunt, Deanna Thompson (who is known on Facebook as “Baudi Moovan”) and John Green. These two, along with millions of other people, were determined to track down the person responsible for these videos. The Netflix documentary Don’t F*ck With Cats (where I initially heard of this case) continues on to show the measures these people took to find Luka.
In 2012, Luka took his crimes to the next level by murdering Lin Jun, an international student in Canada. He recorded this heinous crime, and anonymously posted it online. Viewers were again outraged, and began to contact local law enforcement claiming that these two instances of videos were connected. In the video Luka posted there was a massive poster of the well-known movie Casablanca. Luka then went on to mail the left foot of the victim to the national headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada. It was then that the remaining parts of the victim’s body were found in a suitcase in an alleyway behind an apartment in Montreal. After searching through surveillance footage, a suspect was seen taking out large amounts of trash. It was then that local authorities initially searched the apartment of Luka Magnotta. Luka had moved out, but the search revealed blood stains on multiple items and a message saying “If you don’t like the reflection. Don’t look in the mirror. I don’t care” was written on the wall in red ink.
An arrest warrant was issued for Luka Magnotta. Because he had fled, on May 31, 2012 Interpol issued a Red Notice and his picture was portrayed at the top of the list in hopes it would lead to an arrest. Luka had fled to Paris on May 26 using a fake passport with a fake name. Paris authorities traced Luka all over the city, but their searches came up empty every time. Knowing the authorities were onto him, he boarded a Eurotrain to Berlin, Germany, where he would eventually be captured. On June 18, 2012, Luka was extradited back to Canada to stand trial for his crimes. Luka claimed he was being forced to commit these crimes by a man he calls “Manny.” However, detectives in the case determined there was no “Manny” and that Luka was fully responsible.
Throughout this case, there are many ties that can be seen between Luka Magnotta and one of his favorite films Basic Instinct. This movie delves into the murder investigation of a rock star, with Catherine Tramell being the main suspect. Luka murdered his victim with an ice pick, the same as was done in the film. During his interrogation he was seen sitting with one leg folded on top of the other and asked for a cigarette. The interrogation of Tramell in Basic Instict shows striking similarities to this. Many believe Luka’s actions were a tribute, paying homage to his favorite film.
To learn more about Luka and his crimes I recommend watching the documentary mentioned above. It traces the entire story of Luka and goes deeper into the measures it took to apprehend him.
